The Life of Frederick Douglass Pdf

ISBN: 0399581448
Title: The Life of Frederick Douglass Pdf A Graphic Narrative of a Slave's Journey from Bondage to Freedom
Author: David F. Walker
Published Date: 2019-01-08
Page: 192

“This incredible graphic novel shines a much-needed spotlight on one of America's greatest heroes. The Life of Frederick Douglass deserves serious attention and David F. Walker is the perfect person to author this complex and compelling story.” —Brian Michael Bendis, author of Words for Pictures, writer of Superman, and co-creator of Jessica Jones  “The Life of Frederick Douglass humanizes the national icon of the abolitionist movement and restores a reflective realness to the man whose life still teaches us the meaning of moral conviction, determination, and service. Douglass lived his life at the epicenter of a defining age in American history and through his voice and words we walk alongside him on his journey through the encounters, struggles, and triumphs that shaped this country. Douglass first emancipated his mind through literacy, then his physical self by escaping enslavement as a runaway, setting off a lifelong quest for freedom and opportunity for people of color. Walker’s narrative reads like a fireside chat with the grandfather of the abolitionist movement and illuminates dark corners of American history with the soulful reflection and truth-telling. This masterful story of emancipation draws from Frederick Douglass’ epic life to capture our national history through his personal narrative. This graphic narrative should be in every classroom in America! Douglass’ life story illuminates how great men, women, and indeed nations are born of moral struggle, perseverance, and progress.” —Deirdre Lynn Hollman, educator and founder of The Black Comics Collective “A beautifully accessible and compelling graphic work that delves into the scathing truths that helped build our country. This is our collective story, as told through the eyes of one of the most important American citizens in the history of our nation. Walker, Smyth, and Louise expertly relate the unspeakable traumas of slavery while driving home the true meaning of the American Dream for future generations." —John Jennings, artist of Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation, co-editor of Black Comix Returns and The Blacker the Ink  DAVID F. WALKER is an award-winning comic book writer, filmmaker, journalist, and educator. Walker is best known for his work in comics, including Shaft: A Complicated Man (Dynamite Entertainment), winner of the 2015 Glyph Award for Story of the Year, and its sequel, Shaft: Imitation of Life. His work for Marvel Comics includes Luke Cage, Occupy Avengers, Power Man and Iron Fist, Nighthawk, Fury, and Deadpool. He's also worked for DC Comics (Cyborg), Boom! (Planet of the Apes), and IDW/Monkeybrain (The Army of Dr. Moreau). He is the creator of the prose YA series The Adventures of Darius Logan, and author of the novel Shaft's Revenge, the first new novel starring the iconic black detective in more than forty years.DAMON SMYTH is an illustrator and comic book artist. MARISSA LOUISE is an illustrator and colorist whose color work has appeared in comics and graphic novels from Dark Horse, Image Comics, and BOOM! Studios, among others.

A graphic novel biography of the escaped slave, abolitionist, public speaker, and most photographed man of the nineteenth century, based on his autobiographical writings and speeches, spotlighting the key events and people that shaped the life of this great American.

Recently returned to the cultural spotlight, Frederick Douglass's impact on American history is felt even in today's current events. Comic book writer and filmmaker David F. Walker joins with the art team of Damon Smyth and Marissa Louise to bring the long, exciting, and influential life of Douglass to life in comic book form. Taking you from Douglass's life as a young slave through his forbidden education to his escape and growing prominence as a speaker, abolitionist, and influential cultural figure during the Civil War and beyond, The Life of Frederick Douglass presents a complete illustrated portrait of the man who stood up and spoke out for freedom and equality. Along the way, special features provide additional background on the history of slavery in the United States, the development of photography (which would play a key role in the spread of Douglass's image and influence), and the Civil War. Told from Douglass's point of view and based on his own writings, The Life of Frederick Douglass provides an up-close-and-personal look at a history-making American who was larger than life.

Fantastic Comic, This was the first comic book I’ve read in decades, so I had to make the first one about one of the mythical black heroes such as Frederick Douglass. I love how Walker integrates other black heroes and suffrage advocates into the comic also. I also think making a comic book will spark the interests of our younger generations. An Important and accessible read This is a really well done telling of Douglass' life. The pictures make this very accessible to a wider age group and language ability level. I'm working with other teachers in my building to make this part of our middle school language arts and social studies curriculum next year. Walker takes us through Douglass's personal history but also provides the context needed to better understand Douglass's circumstances. We get a glimpse into American history and it's people through Douglass's lens. I appreciate Walker's introduction explaining that he wanted to capture Douglass's humanity, not the deification of the hero. I feel like we get that humanity through his voice, and the illustrations provide depth to the character and subtlety to the storytelling. Well done on all fronts.Quick and easy read of a great American hero This is an easy and enjoyable read about a true American Hero. The illustrations lend depth to the story. This book is a true telling of a part of American history usually left out of the classroom. Hoping it will inspire many to read Mr. Douglass's autobiography.

Great Lessons, Not-So-Great Everything Else I am having a hard time leaving an actual star review of this book, as the content of the book deserves a 5 star rating, while the organization is not user friendly, and the "quizzes" are very lackluster. In order to receive real quizzes and content, the authors of this book demand that you pay a substantial fee ($30.00 for a limited number of logins - one year or $129.00 unlimited logins - one year) in order to access their subscription area of the website that goes along with this book. This is never mentioned in the description, and I would like those thinking about purchasing this book based on quizzes, tests, and other content to be fully aware of what they are buying (or not buying in this instance).Furthermore, you really do not need to purchase this book unless you would rather have paper in front of you. You are able to go to GrammarBook.com and view this book in its entirety on the website and even take the menial quizzes online if you choose. Just be sure you scroll down BELOW the actually "HEY, BUY ME" stuff to take the free, interactive quizzes. You may also purchase individual quizzes from the subscription service for $1.00 each. This might be beneficial if you do not want to purchase the entire subscription package but want more practice in certain areas that need more work.If you are interested in having the book in front of you, here is a little info on it.The book starts out with an introduction and such, like most books, then leads into the lessons. The lessons are 5 star quality as they are basic, simple to explain, teach and understand. I LOVE THESE LESSONS! One thing I particularly like in the lessons is the "note" section. The authors often keep you up to date with things such as the differences in the acceptable use of the word "none" in the SAT vs. the Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage. This is very helpful if you are using this book to help students prepare for the SAT vs. an essay paper for school. The note section will have current information in relation to the English language as well as other things that may enhance the lesson itself. EXCELLENT.After each lesson, I would really like to see worksheets, so students (or those teaching themselves) can practice the skills they just learned. There are none in this book whatsoever. You are able to subscribe for more content, however, as I mentioned above. After each lesson, there is a quiz. I like this feature. There is one con. The quiz is not immediately following the lesson. There is no wording printed to let you know that the quiz is on page "whatever" in the book. You must search toward the back of the book to find the quiz appropriate for that lesson name. The quizzes are also very simplistic. Again, you can subscribe for more content. There is also an answer key provided at the back of the book, but it is not user friendly nor page numbered. You will need to match the lesson name with the quiz name and the answer key name to be able to locate this key in the back of the book.To summarize:PROS: The lessons are fabulous! This will be my go-to book for teaching/tutoring students in grammar and punctuation. You do not have to purchase this book if you would rather learn or teach from the computer/online.CONS: There are no worksheets to practice newly learned skills in this book. The quizzes are very menial (around 10 - 20 questions and only one quiz per lesson). The book is not user friendly, as the quizzes are toward the back of the book, not page numbered to the lesson, and the answer key works the same way. You may purchase a subscription for more workable content and quizzes (which are desperately lacking in the book) if you choose, but it is fairly pricey.I hate teaching grammar... Let’s be honest. No one is purchasing this book because it’s an exciting read and there are plans to release a movie version soon. You need a grammar book that will allow you to reference something quickly, such as using the correct form of ‘effective’ or how you should avoid using the word ‘literally’ when what you really mean is ‘virtually’. If that’s what you’re after, then this is the book for you. As an English teacher, I’m always on the lookout for an easy to use, teacher-friendly grammar book. What I liked most about this book was its organization and length. It cut right to the chase and focused on the most important parts of grammatically correct writing. The organization of the workbook is its strong suit. It is easy to reference a particular rule or topic. Chapter Five is entitled; Confusing Words and Homonyms. It is a concise list of words that are often misused and confused. I use the list in my classroom every day! Literally, every day!I am a very intelligent 51 yr old back in school to bring myself ... Who knew that I would be so over the top excited to get an english grammar book? I am a very intelligent 51 yr old back in school to bring myself into the 20th century. This book has been a lifesaver. It covers most grammar questions in 2-4 pages with examples. Far easier for me to review or refer to than looking on-line each time. Everyone should have two reference books on hand at home, a dictionary and The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation. No wonder my kids are constantly correcting me! I just bought another copy to give to a young gal in class that is struggling. This will help her for years to come. Honestly, it is a must have.

Thick is sure to become a classic.”
The New York Times Book Review

Smart, humorous, and strikingly original essays by one of “America’s most bracing thinkers on race, gender, and capitalism of our time” (Rebecca Traister)

In these eight piercing explorations on beauty, media, money, and more, Tressie McMillan Cottom—award-winning professor and acclaimed author of Lower Ed—embraces her venerated role as a purveyor of wit, wisdom, and Black Twitter snark about all that is right and much that is wrong with this thing we call society.

Ideas and identity fuse effortlessly in this vibrant collection that on bookshelves is just as at home alongside Rebecca Solnit and bell hooks as it is beside Jeff Chang and Janet Mock. It also fills an important void on those very shelves: a modern black American feminist voice waxing poetic on self and society, serving up a healthy portion of clever prose and southern aphorisms as she covers everything from Saturday Night Live, LinkedIn, and BBQ Becky to sexual violence, infant mortality, and Trump rallies. Thick speaks fearlessly to a range of topics and is far more genre-bending than a typical compendium of personal essays.

An intrepid intellectual force hailed by the likes of Trevor Noah, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Oprah, Tressie McMillan Cottom is “among America’s most bracing thinkers on race, gender, and capitalism of our time” (Rebecca Traister). This stunning debut collection—in all its intersectional glory—mines for meaning in places many of us miss, and reveals precisely how the political, the social, and the personal are almost always one and the same.

The book I didn't know I needed Every essay spoke to my own experiences while also pushing me to think deeper. Hilarious, thought provoking and emotional. Highly recommendBrilliant, profound and witty I tore through Tressie McMillan Cottom's book in just a few hours, underlining copiously. There is so much wisdom and humor here, and her essay In The Name of Beauty is something I will return to again and again for its brilliance and boldness. Highly recommended!- Leta Hong FincherSmart, original & unflinching cultural analysis First off: I have zero qualifications for evaluating Prof. McMillan’s work— she’s a scholar, author and sociologist with a decade-long track record of exceptional work. I’m merely a reader and student of the human condition in all its permutations. But I literally could not wait for Thick’s physical publication date — every review made me that much more impatient to read it for myself — and I’m so glad I finally grabbed a Kindle edition. These essays are so crammed full of striking observations about America’s current and historical racial/economic/class schisms, I feel like it’ll take me two or three more reads to process even half of her well-reasoned arguments. Not unlike reading Plato’s dialogues, this book thrust me immediately into a series of challenging conversations with a wickedly sharp thinker, and left me keenly aware of how little I truly know about the world, for which I am very grateful.
